Chapter 20: Chore Wheel

By the third morning, fifty-two people had discovered that a lodge for twenty has two bathrooms.

The Low still filled the valley below us.

We were three days into it, with six to go, and everyone had a view about the chore wheel.

I had a chore wheel.

It was in Tab 7, under Ground Rules, with a spinning arrow made of a paper fastener and a rivet.

It assigned eight chores to eight riders, on a rotation, and it had been built for two.

I scaled it.

I scaled it in a day and a night, with a ruler, and by Monday morning it ran to six pages and a color key.

Neil had a wheel too.

He had made it on Sunday, on the back of a freeze-dried lasagna box.

At nine o'clock he laid it on the table beside mine, in front of everyone.

"Water, wood, stove, dishes, bathroom," he said. "Sorted by tier."

"By tier," said Elspeth.

"Dues, tenure, lawn. The most senior households get the lightest rotation."

"Neil, dear," said Elspeth, "I've had the heaviest rotation since 1998, and it killed my knee."
