Chapter 22: The Grange
Neil did the arithmetic at six in the morning, on the back of the lasagna box.
He sat at the main table in his borrowed coat, and he did not look up when I came in.
"We have food for fifty-two for fourteen days," he said. "Eleven if we count the goat."
"The goat eats hostas," I said.
"I'm counting the goat," said Neil.
"And water?" I said.
"The spring is running. The pump is on the sun. Water is not the problem."
He turned the box around.
"That's the number," he said. "We have room to give away a week of everything."
I looked at the lasagna box.
The column of figures was neat and a little shaky, and under it he had written a word and crossed it out twice.
"What was the word?" I said.
"Don't," said Neil.
I let him have the box.
Lucy had been up since four.
She had spoken to the Grange on the radio for an hour, in her flat bus-driver voice.
The list was written on her forearm in marker.
Forty-one people, in a hall with one woodstove.
