Chapter 14: Open House

On Sunday at one-fifteen there were six cars parked under the live oaks on my street.

A white sign stood in my front yard with a red OPEN HOUSE flag on top.

Balloons were tied to the porch rail.

Pink ones.

"Kelsey picked those," my mother said from the passenger seat.

"Kelsey's gone. The neighbor says her car hasn't been here since the gala."

"Then she picked them before she left. Nobody else on earth would choose that pink."

I'd printed the deed from the county website on my mother's printer.

Both names. Claire Stanhope. Mason Ridgeway.

I folded it once and put it in my purse.

"Stay in the car?" my mother asked.

"Not this time," I said. "Come in and look at the house."

The front door was propped open with a brick from my father's flower bed.

Inside it smelled like vanilla candles and fresh paint.

Somebody had taken my framed drawing of the Harrington ballroom off the hall wall.

There was a print of a seashell where it used to hang.

I kept walking.

A young couple with a baby on the husband's chest were opening my kitchen cabinets.
