Xu Zhengyuan knocked after dark, and he had brought a book.
It was a thin picture book about a duck, and the price sticker was still on the back.
"Eighteen yuan," he said from the step. "Under the limit. I checked."
"Ran is at Fan Yue's mother's," said Mu Qing. "He won't be reading it tonight."
"It's for Sunday."
"Come in, Zhengyuan."
Xu came in.
Mu Qing pulled the shutter down behind him and turned the bolt, and the sound of it went through the empty shop.
The stove was out, the tables were wiped, and the single bulb over the counter made one small yellow room of the whole place.
Xu stood in the middle of it with the duck book in his hands.
He wore the blue apron over his good shirt, because he had been told to keep it on.
"You wore it all the way from the car," said Mu Qing.
"It was an instruction."
"You are a very obedient man for a chairman."
"Only in certain rooms," said Xu.
Mu Qing took the book out of his hands and set it on the counter.
He had thought about this all day, through the lunch rush and the afternoon.
He had thought about how Xu had led the last time, slowly and with his whole face open.
He had thought about how much he had let him.
