Chapter 22: Red Carpet
The suit belonged to Hu's stylist, and the sleeves came down to Yao's knuckles.
"Hold still," said Pei Dan, with six pins in her mouth. "Hold. Still."
"I am holding."
"You're vibrating."
They stood in the courtyard in the cold gold light of four in the afternoon.
Pei Dan knelt at his feet, and the persimmon tree stood bare above them.
Lanzhou leaned in the doorway in a black dinner jacket, watching them with his arms folded and an expression of deep contentment.
"You look like a very small judge," he said.
"I look like a man dressed by committee."
"You look," said Lanzhou, "like the best crime I ever committed."
Pei Dan took the pins out of her mouth.
"If you two kiss, the pins fly," she said. "Wait for the carpet."
The carpet was a quarter mile long and lined with three thousand people.
