Chapter 22: Boise
"You did this," Fionn said.
He held the phone out across the bed with a hand that wasn't quite steady.
Mikel read the screen.
He was still lying tangled in the sheets, with the red marks on his wrists.
His face went through three expressions in a row.
"I wrote them the week you took the letter back," he said.
"I didn't think it would work," Mikel said. "They'd cancelled you after the second deadline."
"You wrote to the registrar," Fionn said.
"I wrote four pages. I told them everything but the wolves."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I said I'd hidden your letter for two years and I wanted to pay for it. I offered them the cost of your first year."
He almost smiled.
"They said no to the money. They said yes to you."
Fionn stared.
"You tried to buy me a year of college."
"I tried to undo the worst thing I ever did." Mikel looked at him. "I couldn't. But they could let you in."
Fionn put the phone down very carefully.
He crawled across the bed and kissed him, long and slow, with both hands in his hair.
