Chapter 29: The Big Burn

Sophie got on her radio before I'd finished looking.

I got on mine.

"Signal Ridge to county dispatch. Three smokes, south hills, brown and leaning north."

"And I need your captain. Right now."

He came on a moment later.

He'd never heard my voice before, only seen my pictures on his wall.

"Lookout, go ahead."

"Sunday afternoon, the town burns," I said. "The feed store, the church, your station. Unless we change it."

There was a long crackle of nothing.

Then he said, "Tell me how."

It was Thursday at three. The camera could still see Sunday at three.

That gave me until midnight to find a Sunday I could live with.

I went to work.

The captain said they'd hold the river.

I took the picture. Sunday, the fire jumped the river at the bridge like it wasn't there.

"Not the river," I said. "It crosses at the bridge."

He said they'd cut a line along the highway.

I took the picture.

The fire ran around the end of it, through the cemetery on the hill south of town, and came in behind the church.

"Not the highway. The cemetery hill. That's where it comes in."

"I don't have the crews to cut a line that long by Sunday."

Abel was standing behind me on the catwalk.

"Yes, you do," he said, and held out his hand for the radio.

"This is Abel Cutler," he said into it. "Silverfir Pack."
