Chapter 13: Sunday Dinner

The mattress dipped, and Dario lay down behind him.

Ben kept his eyes shut and his breath slow.

He had learned to fake sleep at fourteen, in a house with thin walls and a mother who cried in the kitchen.

He was good at it.

Dario didn't touch him for a long minute.

Then a warm hand settled on his hip.

Ben lay perfectly still.

A mouth pressed against the inside of his left forearm, against the pink stripe the oven door had left there.

It was the lightest kiss Ben had ever been given.

Nobody had ever kissed a burn on him before, and he felt it all the way down to his knees.

The breath on his skin was uneven.

When Dario's hand slid up to rest on his ribs, it was trembling, a fine fast shiver.

He pressed it flat against Ben's side.

*He's cold,* Ben told himself. *It's a bullet hole and a cold floor.*

He knew exactly how stupid that was.

He lay there while the window went from black to grey, and he took a decision so quietly that Dario never felt it.
