I Slept With a Stranger at the Wedding, and Monday He Was My Boss novel · Chapter 12 of 24
Chapter 12: The Laptop
I drove home with both hands on the wheel and said the name out loud twice to hear it.
"Cody."
"Cody Loessin."
Loessin.
I had known Brady's last name for fourteen months, and I had never once heard it said beside a Kneupper's.
Dane was in the kitchen when I got in, standing at the counter with the manila court file open in front of him.
He had finally started reading it.
He looked up, and I saw the cracked-open look of a man who had been reading something that cost him.
"The man in the passenger seat," I said.
"At the courthouse.
"Feed cap, red beard.
"He knew my name.
"Brady was driving him."
"Katrina," Dane said.
"Lottie wrote Cody on her drawing," I said.
"Marlene says 'that boy' like he's a snake.
"The court file has a name blacked out.
"I don't want to guess.
"Tell me."
He was very still.
"What did he look like?" he said.
"Thirty.
"Big.
"Red-brown beard.
"A sunburned neck.
"A pearl-snap shirt."
"That's Cody Loessin," Dane said.
He said it very low.
"My sister's boyfriend.
"Lottie's father."
The kitchen went quiet.
I heard the clock over the stove, and the refrigerator humming.
"I thought he was dead," I said.
"The whole county thinks he's dead."
"He's alive," Dane said.
"He's in Boerne.
"He left my sister when she was five months pregnant.
"I told everyone he died in a truck crash because it was easier than saying he walked out.
"My sister let me.
"He's suing for custody.
"The hearing is set for the tenth of July.
"He wants the child, and he wants the trust."
"What trust?"
"My sister's third of the orchard.
"It goes to Lottie at twenty-one, and whoever has her has the say."
