Chapter 21: Home
Nobody in that courtroom breathed.
Then Dane crossed the floor and went down on one knee in front of the bench.
Lottie looked at him from the top of it, with her rabbit in her fist and her chin up.
"I meant it," she said.
"Mommy said you were the one who stayed."
"I'm going to stay," Dane said.
His voice broke on the second word.
"Every day.
"I swear it."
She put her arms out.
He lifted her off the bench and held her against his shoulder, and his whole back shook.
The judge took off her glasses and wiped them on her sleeve, and she said, to nobody in particular, "We're adjourned."
Cody got up and walked out through the side door without his lawyer.
Nobody stopped him.
The warehouse men parted to let him through, and not one of them looked at him.
I stood with my hand over my mouth, and Marlene came up beside me and took my other hand.
Her fingers were hard and dry and she squeezed until it hurt.
"Well," she said.
"That's done."
"That's done," I said.
"You'll want to ride home with them."
"I can drive myself."
"Honey," Marlene said, "you'll want to ride home with them."
I rode home in the middle of the bench seat of Dane's truck, with Lottie asleep across my lap before we cleared the edge of town.
Nobody talked.
The windows were down, and the Hill Country slid by in the long yellow light, and I watched Dane's hands on the wheel.
They were not quite steady.
