Chapter 16: Riverwalk
I told all three of them about the text before I had my boots on.
Nothing behind anybody's back, and that included mine.
Gunnar walked me down to the Riverwalk through the gray afternoon, with his hand flat on the small of my back.
It was a big warm hand, and I remembered where it had been on the stairs.
He stopped at the trolley shelter, two hundred feet from the water.
"I'll be here," he said.
"He said alone."
"He said you'd come alone. I'm not going anywhere near him."
His thumb pressed once against my spine, and I went on without him.
Dag sat on a bench at the end of the old pier, facing the Columbia.
The wind off the river tugged at his camel coat.
Beyond him a freighter crawled down toward the bar, huge and slow, riding low under its load.
He did not stand up.
"Sit, Ms. Isaksen," Dag said.
"I'll stand," I said.
"As you like."
He looked me over, from the boots to the braid, and his mouth turned down.
