Chapter 6: Thirty Days

Eli drove me around the block twice before I could speak.

"I can't go back to my sister's," I said. "She has two kids and one bathroom. I've been a guest for two nights and I'm already the reason there's no hot water."

"I've got a place."

"Everyone has a place. Mine was a nice one."

"It's a loft over a woodshop in Logan Square," he said. "It's rented by the month. There's a bed with nobody in it and a couch I like better."

I looked at his profile.

"What do you want from me?" I said.

"A seat next to mine on Thursday got me the vote. That's done." His good hand moved on the wheel. "I'm not asking for anything else."

"Everybody asks for something."

"Then name your terms."

I sat with it.

I was a woman with a clinic job that might not last the month, a ring I couldn't return and a suitcase in my sister's front hall.

"Thirty days," I said. "I pay half the groceries."

"Fine."

"No favors, no pity. When the thirty days are up, I find my own place."

"Agreed."

"And you don't touch me."

He glanced at me, then back at the road.

"Eliza," he said, "I was going to say the same."

The loft had a brick wall and a long table covered in drawings.

Everything smelled of cut pine.

He showed me the bedroom, a clean room with a window over an alley and sheets that had been changed that morning.

"You changed them before you knew I'd come," I said.
