Chapter 11: Bingo Is Thursday
The woman from Child Protective Services knocked on my door at 4:40 on Tuesday afternoon, wearing sneakers and carrying a clipboard.
"Ms. Nash? I'm sorry about the timing. I'm here to do a welfare visit."
"Come in," I said. "Would you like coffee? I'd like to give you coffee."
She blinked.
"Most people don't offer."
"Most people have something to hide."
She stepped inside and looked around at the living room, with its secondhand couch, its basket of dinosaurs, and a refrigerator magnet shaped like a peach.
It was clean enough.
Rhonda sat at the kitchen table, shelling pecans and pretending not to listen.
Kent sat beside her with his hands flat on the tablecloth.
"And you are?" the caseworker asked.
"Kent Irwin. I'm Eli's father."
"The report says no father in the picture."
"The report is wrong. I wasn't in the picture for four years, because someone hid it from me. I'm in it now. Ask me anything."
The woman wrote something down and didn't look up.
"Mama!" Eli came barreling down the hall with a coffee can in both arms. "Is this the lady? Does she want to see my caps?"
"She might."
"I have two hundred and eleven. Plus Grandpa's jar. Plus Daddy's grocery bag."
Kent went absolutely still.
It was the first time Eli had said it.
All week he had said "Kent," and "him," and "the man on the fridge."
Now he said "Daddy" as if he had been saying it all his life.
The caseworker set down her clipboard.
