Chapter 10: Locker Room

"He's going to lose," Tilda said, with her pen over the clipboard. "Lane four always starts too fast."

"He's not going to lose."

"I've charted it, Kenji. Fourteen meets."

Kenji sat beside her in the bleachers at the Astoria Aquatic Center with a paper cup of terrible hot chocolate.

The cheering section was made entirely of two people.

The air was thick and wet. Somewhere a whistle went off, and eight swimmers climbed onto the blocks for the two-hundred-meter butterfly.

Soren stood in lane four.

He shook out his arms, rolled his huge shoulders, and looked up into the stands.

He found Kenji at once.

Kenji lifted his cup. Soren pointed one long finger at him, grinning, and put his goggles on.

The horn went off.

"Told you," Tilda said a moment later. "Too fast."

Soren had gone out in front by a body length, and the pack was closing.

"Come on," Kenji said, under his breath. "Come on."

"He's fading."

"He is not."

At the last wall, Soren had half a stroke on the next man and no air left.

He put his head down and went, fast and brutal and perfect, and hit the pad with the whole scoreboard behind him.

*First.*

The crowd, forty strong, went up.

Tilda put down her pen.

"Huh," she said.

Soren hauled himself to the wall, tore his goggles off, and scanned the stands, streaming and grinning.
