Chapter 22: The House
"Proof of what?" the host asked.
"He bought a note on me," my father said through the speaker. "Thirty-eight thousand dollars."
"Now he owns my signature, and I can't leave town without his permission."
"Dad," I said.
Kyle leaned toward the microphone, hungry.
"That's right," he said. "That's what I've been saying. He buys people."
"May I?" I asked the host.
He nodded, delighted.
I took out the papers from my jacket, because I had known he might call.
"Here is the note," I said. "It was held by a loan shark with a sideline in broken thumbs."
"The interest was fifteen percent a month."
"That's the old note," my father said.
"This is the new note. I changed it on Friday morning. The interest is zero. There is no due date."
"The only term is that he pays it down in work, one shift at a time."
The line was quiet.
"Work where?" my father asked.
"At the church pantry. Unloading the Saturday truck. The pastor has agreed."
