Chapter 6: The Booth
I sat on the loft bed after the last showing and heard Wyatt say it again.
I'm going to marry her. And you're the one who wrote the vows.
I had written those vows for a wedding that was supposed to be a prop.
Now he would say my words to her with a real ring.
Then Isla knocked on the loft door and said, "Come up to the booth."
"You said nobody goes in without you."
"I'm here. That counts."
She led me up the back stair with the torch in her hand.
The booth was a small hot room with a low ceiling, two projectors on iron stands and a row of small square windows that looked down onto the empty seats.
It smelled of machine oil and warm dust.
"This is the old one," she said, and laid her palm on the larger machine. "Thirty-five millimetre. My grandfather bought it in nineteen sixty-one and I haven't found anything it can't run."
"It's beautiful."
"It's temperamental. Come here."
She stood me in front of it and pointed at a brass ring on the lens barrel.
"Focus. You turn it until the picture's sharp. Too far one way and it's soft, too far the other and it's soft in a different way."
"I know what focus is."
"On a phone. On this you do it by feel."
She threaded a bit of leader through the gate and switched on the lamp, and a white square of light jumped onto the far wall of the booth.
It was a test card, blurred at the edges.
"Go on," she said.
I put my fingers on the ring and turned it.
The lines sharpened, then softened again.
"Too far."
"I can see that."
