Chapter 11: Page Six

The probate clerk on the third floor of the courthouse was sixty, wore a cardigan with a cat on it, and knew Marshall by name.

"Breckenridge," she said. "You look terrible."

"Thank you," Marshall said. "You look well."

I looked at him.

He hadn't mentioned that the whole building knew him.

It was eight in the morning, and I had not slept.

I was wearing the clothes I'd sat in the car in.

Grady had been asleep when I slipped back in at five.

He had woken at seven and said, "Where were you, honey?" and I had said, "Throwing up in the downstairs bathroom," and he had brought me ginger tea.

I'd poured it down the drain when he went to shower.

"What can I do for the Lindemann wife?" the clerk asked, looking at me over her glasses.

I stood up straighter.

"You know who I am."

"Honey, the whole building knows who you are. I watched your speech four times." She leaned across the counter. "My son went before the judge nine years ago on a first-offense thing. He got two years. The judge's own nephew got probation for worse the same week."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Just tell me you're here to hurt him."

Marshall said, "We're here to read an old will."

"Old Mr. Lindemann's? The grandfather?" She stood and went to a cabinet. "That one's public. People have been reading it since 2019, and all it does is make them mad."

She laid a thin gray folder on the counter and turned it toward us.

"Page six," she said. "Third paragraph. I don't know a lawyer in this county who doesn't know it by heart."

Marshall read it, and handed it to me.

The paragraph was one sentence long.

It said the controlling shares in Lindemann Freight would pass to the first grandchild born to a Lindemann son and his lawful wife.
