Chapter 10: Lights Off

At eleven that night Grady pulled back the covers and patted my side of the bed.

"Come on, Mrs. Lindemann. It's been a hell of a weekend."

I was sitting on the edge of the tub in my robe with the door open a crack.

"I'm going to be sick," I said, and it was true.

I was sick, from the inside, in a place that had nothing to do with the baby.

He waited a moment on the other side of the door, and then I heard him sigh and turn off the lamp.

When his breathing went long, I put on sneakers under my robe, took my keys off the dresser, and went down the stairs one at a time with my hand over the creak at the sixth step.

My Honda was parked at the curb, where I had left it after the pharmacy run.

I sat in the driver's seat with the lights off and the phone recording on the dash.

I wasn't going anywhere.

I just could not lie one more hour in that house, a foot from his hand.

At one o'clock I texted Marshall: I can't sleep inside. I'm in my car outside the house. Don't answer. I just wanted somebody to know.

He answered at once.

Which house?

I sent the address.

Don't move, he wrote.

I thought he meant it as advice.

Twenty minutes later a gray Subaru pulled up behind me with its lights off, and Marshall walked up the sidewalk and tapped on my window with one knuckle.

I unlocked the passenger door.

He got in, and the front seat felt a size smaller.

He was wearing the gray jacket from the lawn, and he had not shaved.

"You were supposed to say you were fine," he said.
