Chapter 9: Sealed Boxes

Grady left for his father's office at noon, and he kissed me at the door again.

I waited until his car turned the corner.

Then I went upstairs and opened the cabinet under the bathroom sink.

My prescription came in a white box every month, from the pharmacy on Far Hills, and I had always taken it out of the box myself.

Until the second wedding.

The week we remarried, Grady had bought me the blue case with seven days on the lid.

"Let me do this for you," he'd said. "You work so hard. I'll fill it every Sunday and you never have to think."

I had thought it was sweet.

The three white boxes sat in the back of the cabinet, behind the spare toilet paper.

I picked them up one at a time and turned them over.

The cellophane on each was whole.

Through the clear window on the end of each box I could see the blister packs, every pill still in its bubble.

My real birth control had not been touched in fourteen weeks.

I sat on the edge of the tub with the box in my lap.

I took a photograph of all three boxes in a row, with the dates printed on the end flaps.

Then I put them back exactly where they'd been, and I shut the cabinet door.

I drove to Brandt Street with the radio off.

Marshall's office light was on.

He was standing with his back to me, writing on a legal pad, and I closed the frosted door behind me hard enough to make the glass shake.

"You said no," I said.

He turned.

"Ten months ago," I said. "I sat in that chair and you said, 'My firm has a conflict,' and you looked at your desk. I walked out and I called seven more lawyers. Seven. Every one of them had lunch with that man's father."
