Chapter 20: The Supper
The Founders' Supper filled the big barn on the second Saturday in June.
Two hundred people sat at long plank tables under strings of lanterns, and the smell of roast beef and woodsmoke rolled down the aisle.
Peg had pinned my green dress at the back, because nothing off a rack fit a woman eight and a half months along.
"You look like a field of spring wheat," she said.
"I look like a wheat silo."
"A very pretty silo."
Boone met us at the barn door in a dark jacket and a clean gray hat.
He took the hat off and held it against his chest when he saw me.
He said nothing for a long moment.
"Well?" I said.
"I'm trying to remember how to talk."
"You're doing fine."
"I'm not."
He kissed me on the temple, and his coat pocket crackled against my arm.
