Chapter 15: The Toast
The room waited for me.
Four hundred people held their glasses, and not one of them drank.
"Come up, dear," Roberta said into the microphone. "Say your piece. I would never silence you."
She wanted me to climb the steps.
She wanted four hundred people to watch a dying woman struggle up a stage in a dress two sizes too big.
I let go of Finley's arm.
"Don't," he whispered.
"Stay here."
I walked to the foot of the stage and stopped.
Roberta bent down and held the microphone out to me, smiling.
I took it.
It was heavier than I expected.
"Good evening," I said, and my voice went out over the chandeliers, small and clear. "I'm Suzette Ellery. Some of you know me as Mrs. Hollister."
Nobody moved.
"I'm not going to take long. I don't have long."
Somewhere in the back, a woman made a sound.
I took a folded paper from the bodice of my mother's dress.
