Chapter 23: The Last Good Day
I woke at six, hungry, and the first thing I said was "Eggs."
Finley had been asleep in the chair with the clipboard on his chest.
He sat up so fast the pen flew across the room.
"Eggs?" he said.
"Scrambled. Toast. Butter, don't be shy."
"The nurse said..."
"I know what the nurse said," I said. "Make the eggs."
He made them.
They were wet in the middle and too brown at the edges, and I ate every bite.
At eight I asked to go outside.
Lester carried out the folding chair and my mother's quilt.
Finley carried me, and I let him, all the way down the stairs and through the front door and into the cold bright morning.
He set me in the chair on the stoop, and tucked the quilt around my knees, and stood back.
The street was waking up.
The poodle woman waved from her porch.
The man with the snow shovel brought over a thermos and set it at my feet without a word.
"Coffee?" he said finally.
"The nurse says no."
"It's decaf."
"Then yes."
He poured it, and sat down on the bottom step, and stayed.
