Chapter 20: The Challenge
The Alpha did not fight his own son.
He stepped back across the ice and lifted two fingers, and a man came out of the wolves' side of the ring.
He was enormous.
He had a shaved head and a neck as wide as my waist, and he took off his coat without hurrying.
"The pack's war-leader," said the old pack elder, tapping his cane. "He stands for the Alpha."
"It's okay," Rhys said to me, very low. "He's slow."
"He doesn't look slow."
"He's a little slow."
"Rhys."
"Stand by the stone," he said, and kissed my forehead quickly, the way you kiss someone before a long trip.
Then he pulled off his jacket and his flannel, and dropped them on the ice.
The wolves formed a ring around the brazier, shoulder to shoulder.
The war-leader changed first.
His hands twisted and thickened, and his back bowed.
In three breaths there was a black wolf the size of a pony in the firelight.
Rhys changed after him.
