Chapter 19: Treaty Circle
The treaty ground was a ring of nine gray stones on the north shore of the lake, frozen to the ice at their feet.
A brazier burned in the middle, low and red.
On the east side of the ring stood the wolves, in flannel and fur collars, with fire on their faces.
On the west stood the vampires, in black coats, perfectly silent, with no lamps at all.
The Alpha and the Regent faced each other across the brazier, without a glance for their sons.
I walked in between the stones with Rhys on my left and Lucian on my right.
Nobody had told them to come.
Nobody had dared tell them not to.
"Juniper Pengelly," said the old woman in black. "Daughter of a wolf and of the Ashgrave court's deserter."
"That's me," I said.
"You are called to hear the law that names you."
"I've heard parts of it."
"Then hear what follows from it," said the Regent.
He stepped forward and spoke without raising his voice.
