Chapter 18: The Ring
Nobody in the lounge breathed.
The man in the gray overcoat looked at the room, and then at his son.
"Preston," he said.
"Dad. I thought you were in Boston."
"I was," said Preston's father. "Then three different people told me my son was sitting in a dormitory with a bandaged wrist."
His voice was smooth and mild, a banker's voice.
His eyes went to Lucian's frost-covered hand, to my gold ones, and to the dead phone in Brielle's fist.
I felt the ring burn.
"Miss Pengelly," he said politely. "I have been looking for your father for a very long time."
"Then you've been looking in the wrong place."
"Not entirely."
He turned to the thirty girls on the couches, who were watching with the faces of an audience.
"My son has been dating a very special girl," he said, "and for five weeks, he did not notice what she was."
"Dad," Preston said.
"I gave you a single task, and you failed it."
"I don't understand."
"No," said his father. "That is the problem."
