Chapter 7: Two Versions

The app's office was on the ninth floor of a glass building in Culver City.

The lobby had a wall of phones playing ninety-second dramas on a loop.

Somebody was slapping somebody on every screen.

"Our people," Izzy said.

She'd worn a blazer over her cargo shorts. Lennon had worn a shirt with every button done up.

"You look like a groom," I told him in the elevator.

"You said dress nice."

"I didn't say dress like you're marrying the elevator."

He undid one button. Then, when I kept looking, a second.

I stopped looking.

The head of content had a corner office and no chairs for guests until an assistant ran in with four.

She was maybe forty-five, in a black T-shirt and reading glasses, with a phone in each hand.

Dallas was already there.

So were Sasha, in pink, and the man in the gray suit.

Dallas stood up and smiled.

"Gigi. Lennon. Love the energy."

"Sit," the head of content said. "I have ten minutes."

We sat.

"Here's my problem. Mr. Zeller sold me thirty-eight episodes of Sugar Tide. I have twenty-eight, plus his promise. Ms. Wheeler says she wrote all of it, owns all of it, and is shooting all of it again herself."

"She's shooting a fan film," Dallas said.

"I'm shooting my show."

The head of content held up one phone without looking up.

"Your video has three million views, Ms. Wheeler. His clip has five. My comments are a war zone. That's good for me." She put the phone down. "So here's the rule. Two versions. One slot. The Fall Slate, Santa Monica Pier, August thirtieth."

"Fine," Dallas said.

"Final cuts on my desk by the twenty-seventh. And clean ownership. I don't premiere anything a judge can take away from me in October. Whoever shows me paper that holds up, premieres."
