Chapter 28: No Confidence

The three of them walked up the stage steps on Karin's side.

The woman with the badge went to Karin's podium.

She spoke low, but Karin's microphone was still on.

"Mayor Thorsby. Agents are executing search warrants at your office and at Thorsby Paving's yard as we speak. We'd like you to come and talk to us tonight."

"I'm in the middle of a debate."

"Yes, ma'am," the agent said. "You picked the venue. We didn't."

Karin looked out at the auditorium.

Eight hundred people looked back.

She took off her lapel microphone and set it on the podium.

Then she walked off the stage between two agents, with the third one carrying her folder.

The woman with the badge stopped beside Marit.

"Ms. Sandvik. We'll need you tomorrow, with a lawyer."

"I'll be there," Marit said. "I'll bring a baby."

"That's fine," the agent said, and almost smiled.

The moderator looked at his cards.

Then he looked at me.

"Ms. Sandvik," he said. "You have the closing statement. And, I suppose, the rest of the time."

I didn't use it.

I said thank you, and goodnight, and I took my sister down the stage steps by her right hand.
