Chapter 7: Right Hand

I should have closed the door.

She was shivering so hard her teeth clicked.

"Where's your car?"

"At Anders's. I left after he came home." She wiped her nose on the borrowed sleeve. "I took a cab to the end of the block. I didn't want him to see the address on the app."

"He knows the address. He was just here."

"I know. He told me." She laughed, and it came out wet. "He came home and told me all about it. He was happy, Signe. I've never seen him that happy."

I opened the door wider.

Jens came down the hall in his socks, saw who it was, and stopped.

He looked at me.

"Kitchen," I said. "Ten minutes."

He filled the kettle without a word and went back to Tova's room and left the door open a crack.

Marit sat down at the kitchen table where Tova had served me pancakes.

She looked at the fish magnet and the chart.

PLOW 1. PLOW 2. PLOW 3.

Her face crumpled for a second, and then she fixed it.

"So it's true. Three."

"It's true."

"He said you never wanted kids." She turned the mug Jens had left in front of her. "He said it for a year. That you'd decided. That it was your career. That you'd made him promise."

"I asked him every month for a year."

"I know that now."

"He told me he was too tired to try."

She nodded slowly.

"He wasn't too tired," she said. "He was at my apartment."

The kettle clicked off.

I didn't get up.

"Why are you here, Marit?"

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she started talking, and I let her, because I'd never once let her before.

How I got the engineering scholarship, and she got a hug at the airport and "you'll find your thing."
