Chapter 23: Six Months Up

Doyle brought the case in at midnight.

It was a steel box with a cold seal, and he set it on Valentin's desk.

"The agents found a second cold room behind the first," he said. "Behind a false wall. Six more."

"Six," said the doctor, from the doorway, in a voice I had not heard from him before.

"Twelve," I said. "All of it."

Doyle's face did something I had not seen it do.

It cracked wide open, and he turned his back and examined the bookcase for a long time.

The doctor ran the fourth line into Valentin's arm at the desk.

When it was in, he left us.

The study was warm. The fire was lit. The window showed black glass and a few lights moving on the harbor.

I sat on the sofa with a strip of tape across my ribs.

Valentin sat in the chair across from me with the drip hanging off a lamp stand.

His hand lay on his knee.

It was still, for most of a minute.

"Calvin said to read the last clause," I said.

Valentin went quiet.

He reached inside his coat, pulled out a folded page gone soft at the creases, and gave it to me.

I read it by the fire.

The last line of the last page, in small black type, under all the rest.

The term ends at six months, or on the day Calvin Harlow is delivered to the fiancée, whichever comes first.
