The storm had blown itself half out by three in the morning.
What was left of it threw the sea at the rocks in long black walls.
Six launches ran along the foot of Windward with every lamp on and their bows toward the cliff.
From the lawn above, they would have been a wall of glare.
From the cleft, they were a row of friends.
I stood in the Lucia's stern in an oilskin and a borrowed life jacket, holding the headlamp.
I watched the water slide back from the ledge.
"Now," Tiago said, and swung himself onto the rock.
He reached for me and I took his hand.
The iron door waited where we had left it, a hand's width open, with cold air breathing from the gap.
The last of the swell ran out around our boots.
