Chapter 12: Snow in the Truck
The truck was an old black pickup with a bench seat, and it smelled like leather and snow and him.
I climbed in after him and slammed the door.
The windshield was already white with falling flakes.
Axel sat behind the wheel in his grey sweatshirt, barefoot, panting.
His bare feet on the floor mat, looking at me like I had hit him with a car.
"The neighbors," he said.
"Let them look."
"It's snowing."
"Good," I said. "Nobody can see in."
I turned the key one click, and the heater blasted warm air across our knees.
The seat warmers glowed.
I pushed my coat off my shoulders and pulled my jeans down my legs.
I kicked one boot into the footwell and the other against the door.
He watched with his mouth open.
"Put your hands on the wheel," I said.
"What?"
"The wheel. Both hands. Ten and two."
He put them there.
His knuckles went white on the leather.
I climbed over the gear shift and into his lap.
A knee on either side of his thighs, my back to the dashboard, facing him.
The steering wheel pressed against my spine.
His arms were stretched out on either side of me, locked at the wheel, boxing me in.
It was the warmest place I had ever been.
"You don't let go," I said. "Not for any reason. If you let go, I'm out of this truck and you can think about it for a week."
"I won't let go."
"Say it again."
"I won't." His voice cracked. "I swear."
I reached down between us and opened his sweatpants.
He was hard already.
I pulled him free and took him in my hand.
He made a low animal sound and his head dropped back against the headrest.
