Chapter 22: Opening Night
On opening night I stood in the wings in a grey sweater and jeans and watched another woman dance my role.
The Marlowe was full to the top balcony.
Victor sat in the box above the stage, upright, with his cane across his knees.
He had a flight to catch and a house to smile at first.
Alec sat in the orchestra, on the aisle, in the suit Roxy had hurried to find for him.
He had not looked at the stage once.
He kept looking at the exit.
Lena danced Act One cleanly.
She had always been clean, and there was no mistake in it, and no life either.
She took her bows at the interval with her mouth in a smile and her eyes on nothing.
The curtain fell.
The house lights rose.
She came off with the stage manager at her elbow and walked straight past her dressing room.
She came to me.
"I can't do Act Two," Lena said.
"You have to."
"No." She was breathing too fast.
"My mother is in Connecticut, in a garden, in a bed Geoffrey paid for."
"Victor can't touch her."
"Lena."
"He gave me this role with her bed. I took it, and I'm done."
