Chapter 12: The Light

"Sending him," Greer said again.

Darren's mouth opened and shut.

Sixty people stood in the gravel with flats in their arms and listened to the silence.

"I misspoke," he said.

"Say it again. What did you say?"

"I said it badly. I meant that you didn't know what you were doing. Greer, please, the doctor's here."

"Darren."

She said his name so quietly that he stopped.

"Tell me what you meant," she said, "or I'll tell the whole parking lot what you said."

He looked around at the faces.

I saw him do the sum.

"At the hospital," he said at last. His voice had gone small. "That first night. They'd sedated you, and you were talking in your sleep. You said it over and over."

"Said what?"

"I sent him. I sent him." He pressed his hand to his mouth. "I never repeated it to a soul, Greer. I've kept it for you for two years."

Somebody near the lavender made a low noise.

June had come around the till and was standing at my elbow, and I felt her hand lock on my sleeve.

Greer was looking at no one.

She turned and walked back across the gravel.

She didn't hurry.

At the greenhouse door she took the truck keys off the hook and held them out to me without turning her head.

"You drive," she said. "I can't do it with this hand."

"Greer."

"Now, Asa."

I looked at her hands.

They were shaking so hard the keys rang.

I took them.

June let go of my sleeve.

"Go," she said. "I'll close up. I'll sit on him if I have to."

We left the lot with sixty people watching and Darren standing in the middle of the gravel with his arms hanging.
