Chapter 18: Candles and Ice

The back window of the black car slid down.

Nunzio sat inside in a camel overcoat, eating sunflower seeds out of a paper bag.

"Bartender," he said. "Get in. It's cold."

"I'm good here."

Nunzio shrugged and spat a shell onto the street.

Behind Mickey, the green door opened.

He didn't have to look.

The whole crew was in the doorway, the server with the nose ring in front, holding a paint scraper.

Nunzio looked past Mickey at them.

"Cute," he said. "You've got a staff."

"What do you want?"

"I heard you moved out of my cousin's place."

"News travels."

"Everything travels. I hear he had a file on you." Nunzio smiled. "I could have told you he would. He keeps files on everybody. He had one on me since I was nineteen."

He reached into his overcoat.

He held a fat white envelope out the window.

"Sixty-four thousand," he said. "Every dollar she took. You can count it."

Mickey didn't move.

"And this place." Nunzio nodded at the tavern. "I talked to the old lady's nephew in Joliet. He gets the building when she dies, and he'd love to sell it now. I buy it. Deed in your name. Your grandfather's bar. Your father's stool."
