Chapter 7: The Table

Mickey picked up the photo.

He looked at it for a while, because he wanted his hands to stop doing what they were doing.

Then he set it face up on the bar where the whole room could see it.

"That's me kissing my fiancée," he said. "Last Saturday. Before she told forty people I poisoned the Don."

The fat capo shrugged.

"So you like girls."

"I liked her."

"And now?"

Mickey looked at Santino.

Santino was watching him, not the capo. He hadn't moved a finger.

"Now I've got taste," Mickey said.

The two-top that had choked on the olive laughed out loud.

The fat capo didn't.

He picked up his Johnnie Blue at last, drank half, and stood.

"Bring him tomorrow," he told Santino. "Two o'clock. Let the table look at him."

The back room of the social club on Taylor Street smelled like espresso and old cigars.

There was a picture of the Pope over the door and a picture of Sinatra over the bar.

A long table with a green cloth, and seven men around it.

Nobody sat at the head.

That was the Don's chair, and it stayed empty.

Santino walked Mickey in with his gloved hand on the small of Mickey's back.

The capo with the cane looked at the hand and crossed himself again.

"You're bringing him to the table," he said. "Your father never brought your mother to the table."

"My father isn't here," Santino said. "Somebody saw to that."

He pulled out a chair for Mickey.

Not behind him. Beside him.

Nunzio sat across from them in a cream suit, his diamond watch on the green cloth.
