Chapter 16: St. Rita's
St. Rita's was empty at seven except for the candles.
It was the church where I was supposed to be married on Saturday, and the florists had already been.
White roses stood in tall vases along the aisle, bigger than the ones Piero had carried into the bakery.
A priest in a black cassock swept near the side altar and did not look up.
I walked down the center aisle in my leather jacket with the blue contract in my inside pocket.
Enrico and Adamo waited in the van outside, because I had asked.
I wanted a door between me and every man who loved me, so that nobody could say I had been carried here.
Old Barbieri sat in the third pew on the left.
He wore the same gray cardigan.
He had an unlit cigarette between two fingers and a face like a closed hand.
"Sit," he said, in the rasp that fifty years of smoke had left him. "You're early."
