Chapter 15: The Oldest Capo
The oldest capo sat at Nonna's kitchen table with his cane across his knees.
He had come in a taxi, alone, at one in the morning, in a black overcoat buttoned to the chin.
The lemon oilcloth looked ridiculous under his hands.
Nonna put a cup of coffee in front of him, and for once she put one in front of his chair on purpose.
I came down in my brother's sweatshirt with my hair standing up.
Enrico came behind me with the pistol.
Adamo stayed on the stair, where he could see the door and the old man both.
"Sit, children," said the oldest capo. "I haven't the breath to look up."
We sat.
His hearing aid whistled once, and he adjusted it with a shaking thumb.
"You have a paper," he said to me.
I didn't ask how he knew.
I took the blue contract out of the sweatshirt pocket and laid it on the lemons.
He read it with his lips moving.
When he reached the pencil line he stopped, and closed his eyes.
