Chapter 14: Nonna's Table
Bay Ridge hid us by closing around it.
By one in the morning the Sons of Bari had put two old men in folding chairs at each end of Third Avenue.
They wore cardigans and carried canes, and they were armed with more than that.
The woman in the church hat parked her sedan across the alley behind the bakery and left a note on the windshield for the police.
The note said, "Wedding party. Ask the Don."
Nobody asked.
Nonna met us at the back door in her robe, took one look at my torn jacket, and held up a wooden spoon.
"Eat," she said.
At seven that night she set the long table in the bakery's back room.
It was two sheet-pan racks laid with plywood and covered with three tablecloths that didn't match.
The neighbors brought the rest.
The woman from the second floor brought a tray of baked ziti under foil.
The man in the Mets cap brought a case of wine with no label.
The teenager with the skateboard brought his grandmother's meatballs, in a pot he carried.
