Chapter 19: The Dress
Norma sat in Bayonne behind her sister's locked door.
Two Ferrante men stood on the porch, and a casserole was in the oven.
Brusco's car had come for her on Tuesday, and her sister had told the driver where he could go.
That was all I let myself think about.
It was five in the afternoon, and I stood in the fitting room of a boutique on Halsey Street.
The shop was closed and the blinds were drawn.
The dress was dark green satin.
It hugged me from the breasts to the knees, and the back dipped almost to my waist.
The seamstress had left an hour ago.
She had sewn a deep pocket into the lining of the skirt, where my father's revolver would sit against my thigh.
She had not asked a single question.
She had taken a thick envelope from Luciano and gone.
Now the room was warm and quiet, lit by two soft sconces.
There was a velvet chair in the corner and a tall mirror on three sides.
He sat in the chair.
He had loosened his collar, and he watched me with his elbows on his knees.
"Turn around," he said.
I turned slowly in front of the glass.
I saw myself from every angle, the freckled shoulders, the soft hips, the green of the dress, the face of a woman I hardly knew.
I saw him behind me, watching.
"You look like a queen," he said.
"I look like a waitress in a nice dress."
"You look like a woman about to ruin a man in public."
I smiled at him in the mirror.
"Don't get up," I said.
"No?"
"You don't move. You don't touch. You watch."
His eyes darkened.
"Janelle."
"Tell me you can do that."
"I can do that," he said, very low.
"Good."
His whole body jerked, and I saw it, and my heart kicked.
