The whole church turned from Nicky to Dom.
He didn't.
He kept one hand on his son's collar and looked straight down the aisle at the people.
"Then let them look in my house," he said. "Every drawer. I'll hand them the keys on the steps."
Nicky laughed. It cracked in the middle.
"He's lying. He's been lying since I was born."
"Nicky." I came down from the lectern. "You want to tell them where the money went? I'll help you."
I walked to the front pew.
Nonna was still standing with the cast held up in both hands.
She lowered it into mine without a word.
I turned it over in front of the coffin and pushed the gauze out of the hollow base with my thumbnail.
The memory card dropped into my palm.
I held it up between two fingers, the way Nonna had held the plaster.
"You've been wondering for two months where your notebook went, Nicky," I said. "Every page is on this card."
His face changed.
"Thirty percent of every job went to one letter," I said. "I'm going to show this church whose."
