Chapter 24: The Head of the Table
Dom looked down at the old man for a long moment.
"Then I'll stop being one," he said. "And see how old I get."
The old man put his hat on and walked away down the steps with his cane.
Dom watched the van turn the corner.
Then he took my hand on the church steps, in front of everybody still standing there, and didn't let go of it.
The detective called at four.
"The warrant's dead," he said. "My lieutenant tore it up himself. He wasn't happy about it."
"Tell him I'm sorry."
"I didn't. The medical examiner looked at the teeth an hour ago with your cast on the table. It isn't your ex-husband in that box." He paused. "DNA on the boy will take a few weeks. His mother already knows."
That night Dom didn't sleep.
He sat on the back steps of the house in his shirtsleeves, looking at the river, and I sat a step above him with my arms around his shoulders.
On Saturday we went to the T-ball game.
He sat on the metal bleacher in the neighborhood park in a polo shirt, between me and Nonna, with a bag of sunflower seeds.
