Chapter 25: Papers Again
He didn't let go of my hand.
He didn't argue.
He lay there beside me in his shirt and looked at the ceiling for a long time.
"When," he said.
"This week."
"All right."
"That's it?"
"You told me I'd tell you why," he said. "In my study. The first night. You'd tell me when you trusted me." He turned his head on the pillow. "You're telling me. I'm listening."
I cried then.
Not much. Just enough that he put his arm under my shoulders and pulled me over against his shoulder, and I let him.
I slept in his bed that night, in my dress, with the bedspread over both of us.
It was the last night.
The new lawyer was a woman my father went to high school with.
She wasn't afraid of anybody because she was seventy-four and had already buried two husbands.
"Again?" she said, when I sat down in her office. "I just watched you do this on the news."
"This one's different."
"They're all different, honey."
She wrote it up in two days.
