Chapter 32: Spring
"Then come in out of the snow," I said.
I took his arm and brought him in before he fell down on my porch.
I sat him on the exam table.
He was maybe forty, with a week of beard and hands cracked from cold.
"Who shot you?" I said.
"Don't know. Somebody off a road in Kentucky. I just kept walking."
"How long ago?"
"Three days."
I cut his coat off him.
Six holes in his side and hip, black around the edges, the veins running dark toward his heart.
"Deacon," I said, not loud. "Bowie."
I didn't need to be loud anymore.
The ladder came down from the loft.
Deacon came down it first, in sweatpants, half asleep, bending his head under the beam out of habit.
Bowie came down after him with a quilt around his shoulders like a cape.
"Don't mind us," Bowie told the stranger. "We live here."
I put my palms flat on his side.
Deacon's open hand was over the back of mine before I'd finished putting it there.
Bowie's palm was warm on the back of my neck.
