Chapter 10: The Old Texts

Flora's POV

"Say that again," I said.

Dr. Quince took off his wire glasses and cleaned them on his tweed sleeve.

"Cedric was never the strong one," he said. "It's in the Redhollow records, under the oldest charter. Most of the pack has never read it."

"Abel, I've read the charter," Cedric said from the cot. "I read it at twenty-two."

"You read the printed one. The old text is in a locked case in the cellar, and it was written in the founder's own hand. The first Luna of Redhollow carried the strength of the whole pack, and her mate drew it through the bond."

I looked down at Cedric's hand under mine.

"Drew it how?"

"Every time they touched. Every time they stood near each other. Redhollow's Alpha is only as strong as his Luna's wolf. That's why the old Alphas never let their mates out of their sight."

Nobody spoke.

Down the hall, a kettle began to whistle, and Ronan's healer went to take it off.

"I've felt it," Cedric said slowly. "At the feast. She sat down and I could breathe."

"Of course you could."

"When she left, I couldn't shift."

"Because the bond was starving. Flora's wolf has been starving for months, and her wolf was the one feeding you. You've been running on what little she had left over, Cedric. When she walked out of the gate, she took the last of it with her."

I thought of the greens.

I thought of the roast lifting off my plate.

I thought of Wyndham's Alpha laughing into his glass.

Mated a weak wolf.

I started to laugh.

It was quiet at first.

Then I couldn't stop, and I had to sit down on the stool with both hands over my stomach.
