Chapter 9: Cedric's POV

Cedric's POV

The Stonecrest healer stitched my eyebrow with six small knots and told me I would not die of it.

I lay on a clinic cot under a lamp and listened to the inside of my own head.

It was quiet.

Since I was twelve there had been a second voice in there, low and warm, who woke before I did and spoke in smells and weather.

I had named him Ash.

He had been silent since the night Flora took off her cuff.

I had told myself it was shame.

I had told myself that an Alpha who did what I'd done deserved to have his wolf turn his back.

Tonight I had stood in my own yard in front of my own Watch and called for him, and nothing had answered.

The Watch captain had not looked me in the face.

"Alpha," he had said. "We take our orders from the Beta now."

I had let them put me out of the gate.

I hadn't fought them.

I had nothing to fight with.

Flora sat beside the cot with a basin of water, wringing out a cloth.

She had been crying and had stopped.

She had put a wet cloth over my eye without asking and was holding it there with two fingers.

"Don't talk," she said.

"I wasn't going to."

"Your hand is doing it again."

I looked.

It was shaking on the blanket.

She reached down and laid her palm on top of it.

The tremor stopped.

I closed my eyes.

I knew what I was supposed to feel.

I was supposed to feel shame, and I did.

I had been Alpha for eight years and a husband for fourteen months, and I had sat at the head of a table and signed my name on whatever Philippa slid under my hand.
