Chapter 8: The Allowance

Holly ate two plates of eggs in the Stonecrest kitchen before she could say a full sentence.

I sat across from her and watched her hands shake around the fork.

"She fired me in front of the whole kitchen," Holly said. "She said I'd been stealing food from the Luna's pantry."

"Stealing it for who?"

"For you. I used to hide rolls in your coat pockets. She had a woman watching me."

"Holly."

"It's all right. I'm out. But I brought something."

She pushed the cardboard box across the table.

Under a layer of dish towels there was a thick, grease-spotted ledger with a Redhollow crest on the spine.

"That's the household book," she said. "Philippa signs the pages monthly. I copied the Luna's page in my own hand, the week I started sewing your coat, because I thought one day somebody would need it."

She opened it to a bookmark and turned it around.

The page was headed LUNA EXPENSES, and it was a column of dates running back fourteen months.

Next to every date was the same number.

$2,100.

Next to every number was the same initials, in a small neat hand.

P.C.

I read the column twice.

"What's this?"

"Your allowance. Every Luna gets one. It's in the pack charter. Two thousand one hundred a month for clothes, doctors, whatever you want."

"I've never seen it."

"I know. It goes into an account every month. I saw the transfer slip once because I was holding the mail. The account is in Philippa's name."

I did the math in my head.

Fourteen months, at twenty-one hundred.

Twenty-nine thousand four hundred dollars.

I had been arrested for two hundred.
