Chapter 12: Thin Walls
Eun-ho wrote his resignation on Sunday morning at the kitchen table, in pen, on a sheet of printer paper.
It was three lines.
He read it over and thought it looked like the letter of a man who'd lost.
The photograph sat face-up on the table beside it, printed at the convenience store at the end of their block.
He couldn't stop looking at it.
Ji-yu came out of her room in her pajamas with her glasses pushed up in her hair and read the letter over his shoulder.
"No," she said.
"It's the only thing that works."
"If I'm gone, there's no omega on his floor, and the photo is only a CEO with his ex-secretary."
"It's a CEO kissing his ex-secretary in a car."
"Fine. A scandal. But it's not a crime."
"Oppa."
She sat across from him.
She looked small and furious.
She had been up since the police called, Eun-ho could tell, because she never wore the yellow pajamas unless she wanted to be left alone.
"You've hidden for six years because you were scared of one thing," she said.
"Being chosen for someone else's reasons. You'd rather give up the one man who picked you for the right ones."
"He didn't pick me. He found me."
"What's the difference?"
Eun-ho didn't have an answer.
The doorbell rang.
They looked at each other.
Ji-yu put her glasses on and went to the intercom, and Eun-ho heard her say, "Oh," in a flat, delighted voice.
