Chapter 13: The Reception

By Friday night Eun-ho had been warm for six days, and he was losing.

Every morning he wore Si-wan's undershirt beneath his own.

Every afternoon in the Vice Chairman's office he sat with his knees pressed together and his pen shaking.

Jung-gook didn't notice.

Or he pretended not to, and let Eun-ho sweat, and turned his gold pen.

He had read the green folder of fake receipts three times with a look of such tender joy that Eun-ho wanted to be sick.

Then came the shareholders' reception.

The Grand Ballroom of the Haeryung Hotel held four hundred people under three chandeliers, with a string quartet in the corner and champagne on silver trays.

Eun-ho stood at the edge of it in his best suit with the Vice Chairman's briefcase.

Across the room Si-wan stood with the Daon chairman, making her laugh.

He had not looked at Eun-ho all night.

The heat rolled up Eun-ho's spine in a slow hot wave, and he locked his knees against it and counted the chandeliers.

Seven crystals on the nearest.

Eight.

His shirt was damp.

The smell of the room hit him in layers: perfume, wine, wool, sweat.

Under all of it, strong and warm and unmistakable, was the cedar that was Si-wan.

Someone at his shoulder said, "Are you unwell?"

Eun-ho turned.

A shareholder, an older beta woman, was frowning at him.
