Chapter 14: The Back Room of the Pharmacy
Ji-yu was waiting in the pharmacy doorway in the rain with her hood up and a bag over her shoulder.
Eun-ho tumbled out of the sedan with Si-wan's jacket still around him, and she took one look at his face and swore.
"You smell like a candle factory exploded."
"Is she here?"
"Back room. She won't leave. She says she's too old to be moved by anybody she hasn't met."
Mapo's old pharmacy street was dark except for one green cross, and the shutters were half down.
The driver stayed with the engine running.
Ji-yu pulled Eun-ho through the side door, past shelves of cough syrup and bandages.
They came into a back room where a single bulb swung over cardboard boxes stacked to the ceiling.
In the corner, in a cheap folding chair, sat a woman of sixty-odd with grey hair in a braid and a cardigan the color of oatmeal.
She was eating a tangerine.
"There's the boy," she said. "You've gotten thin."
