Chapter 24: Supper
A year later, Ansel woke me by telling me his plans.
"I'm going to open the north reports at eight," he said into my hair. "I'm going to eat lunch with Emmett. I'm going to be late for supper because the council is on the phone."
"Mm," I said.
"That's all of it. Now I'm going to tell you what I'm going to do before any of that."
I opened one eye.
The window was full of grey morning light and the sound of the sea.
"Go on," I said.
"I'm going to kiss the mark on your shoulder."
He did, and the old bite tingled all the way down my arm.
The bond hummed between us, warm and easy, the way it did every morning now.
I could feel that he was already hard against my back, and he could feel that I knew.
"Tell me the rest," I said.
"Slowly. Then not slowly."
"That's a good plan."
It was a very good plan.
He rolled me under him in the early light and took his time.
When he finally moved inside me we both laughed, because we each felt the other laugh.
I came with my fingers in his hair and his mouth on the mark.
Afterward he lay with his head on my stomach, and I counted the grey in his hair.
There was one strand.
"I'm telling you I'm happy," Ansel said into my skin.
"I know," I said. "I'm telling you anyway."
The Founders' Supper was held in Garrick Hall once a year, as it had been for three hundred years.
I came in at six with the Luna's keys on my belt.
I had taken them from Odessa in March, on a Tuesday, because I had wanted to.
